Jamaican Education Support Program "Feed the hunger educate the younger"
The Jamacian Education and Support Program was founded in 1989 by D J Gordon, a native of Westmoreland, Jamaica. Gordon was born in 1957, one of 10 children. As farmers, they raised crops and livestock for a living, and like most everyone else in the community, the family struggled to keep the children clothes and fed. In 1985, Gordon was fortunate to have an opportunity to come to the U.S. When he left Jamaica, he intended to find a way to help his community. Because he always had a special concern for children, he founded the Jamacian Education and Support Program.
To date, his efforts have been focused on two Jamacian schools: The Rolling River Basic School, a single-room school house, and the Maroontown Basic School in Maroontown. He has raised supplies and equipment for the schools, through various fund raisers from fashion shows and concerts to Carribbean dance parities.
However, the schools are continually in need of supplies and funds for improving the facilities, and operating the electricity and plumbing. The Jamacian Education Support Program also has many goals they'd like to achieve from building sports facilities and a library, to holding workshops where children can learn about computers, gardening, arts and crafts, music, environmental awareness, history and more. The goal of the program is to allow the children to learn in a positive environment, increase their international awareness and self esteem, and encourage them to peruse their interests and abilities.
